The Student
I seem to be doing a lot of newspaper work at the moment. Here's an exciting sneak peak of a short story that's appearing in the Student next week. I'm probably not supposed to post this. Oh well

She paced in the waiting room in short sharp strides; her hands flitting in and out of her pockets, alternating between clasping together and hanging limp. The only other occupant of the room sat in one of the chairs which ran along the wall; he was flicking through an old movie magazine, his eyes sliding over articles about the latest releases. Without stopping or looking at him the girl addressed her companion.
“How can you act so calm?”
“Why do you think I’m acting?”
“You mean you’re not worried?”
“Why would I be worried?”
“Stop answering my questions with questions.”
“Ok.”
She stopped and turned to look at him.
“How can you not be worried about this? You don’t know what he is going to do, what if it hurts?”
“If it hurts it hurts.”
“You’re not taking this seriously.”
He looked up from the magazine and met her gaze.
“It’s the dentist, it’s a check-up, he will poke about in my mouth for a minute, decide everything is fine and charge me for the pleasure of forty-five minutes waiting for an appointment that lasts all of thirty seconds.”
“But what if he doesn’t?”
“Then he doesn’t. Then I have to come back in a few weeks and pay even more money to get my teeth fixed. But that won’t happen, my teeth are fine.”
“Then why are you here?”
“I don’t know, you made me book an appointment just before yours, why am I here?”
“Moral support.” She began pacing again.

Another exhibition?
Yes indeed! Alongside the very fine Josefin Sundqvist! Here is the poster:
I will go and take photos at a later date. There are some very fine paintings.
Also, my paintings are now up in the Little Bead Shop on Bruntsfield Place, Edinburgh's finest, and possible smallest, emporium of beads. For the curious, it is worth noting that the adjective "Little" describes the shop (which is quite small compared to other shops) rather than the beads (some of which are quite large, compared to other beads).
Good day!

The Owl and the Pussycat

I've actually had these prints for quite some time, but it's only now they're framed that I've got round to photographing them. They're illustrations for Edward Lear's The Owl and the Pussycat, and if you don't know it you should read more books.

It's sort of Christmas now
It's sort of Christmas now. I went to a carol concert on Wednesday, so I'm almost feeling festive. Anyway, the concert was part of the launch of a book called the Gift of Words, a poetry anthology for the Sick Kids Foundation, which I did an illustration for. Anyway, it's very good, so I suggest everyone goes and buys one, which you can do by clicking on these words.
That's enough writing for one morning.. I have work to do!

It's not Christmas yet
Ah, no more group work. I've returned to the cupboard under the stairs with a fresh cup of tea, a bottle of ink, and a Pink Martini album- but that's not the only news. Actually it more or less is. Aside from that, the grand exhibition is still up in Mavi's, you can see it in all it's tiny, slightly out-of-focus glory right here.
That's alongside the work of the fine Oli Ninnis and Bec Crane. You can see Oli's work here, but I don't think Bec has a website. In other news, those beard books should be making their grand return to the Analogue bookshop on the grassmarket, and some more of my stuff is going up in the illustration studio for all the world to see. I haven't scanned any of it yet, but here's a little snippet of the written part:
My cousin once said to me "James,
I have had no success with the dames,
by the length of my beard
it is much as I feared,
Too much time playing video games."

I'll leave it up to your imagination to guess at the accompanying image. See you all.
